Dhaka-- – Australian Trevor Martin Chappell has been appointed coach of Bangladesh national cricket team.

Another Australian Jon Gloster has been named as team’s physio for the ensuing Zimbabwe tour scheduled in April next.

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Saber Hossain Chowdhury announced the appointment in a press conference held at the BCB office yesterday.

BCB called the briefing to announce the names but it turned into a discussion on the recently concluded board election which was widely criticized for unholy practices like “vote for cash”.

The BCB boss, however, informed the newsmen that a ministry level inquiry team might be formed to investigate into the widespread allegations of bribery and use of muscle power in the election.

“The new Board members should have acceptability to lead the country’s cricket,” the apparently unhappy BCB president said apprehending that “nasty” elements could shake the very foundation of Bangladesh cricket.

But the BCB supremo still firmly stands with the concept of election under the new constitution that was passed in last year’s AGM as he thinks “the success of the election depends on its electorates.”

Commenting on the selection of Trevor Chappell, the youngest brother of former Australian famous Gregg and Ian Chappell, Saber said he is the right man to fulfil the needs of Bangladesh team.

He said Rodney Marsh and Waine Phillipe who toured in Bangladesh with their academy team recently proposed the name of Trevor.

“We met Trevor during the ICC meeting in Adelaide and selected him after discussing with some other Australian coaches.”

Jon Golster, the physio of English county team Surrey, will look after the Bangladesh team only for Zimbabwe tour as the board is not thinking about long term appointment for the national squad.

The BCB boss informed that the formal agreement would be signed with the Australian coach after his arrival here on March 13/14. He will take over the charge of the 22-member national team immediately.

He said that the Board has a target to settle with Trevor upto the next World Cup but in the meantime they would observe him for the next one year.

“Trevor is a specialist fielding coach, which is most important in the modern cricket to earn success,” the BCB president said.

He also observed that use of computer technology is now an important part of modern cricket and Trevor could make good contributions in this purpose.

Replying to a question, Saber said, Trevor’s unpopularity for his under-arm bowling is different matter because he has proved himself as a very sound and able coach.

Trevor has considerable professional and first class playing/coaching experiences within Australia and overseas.

Born on October 12, 1952, Trevor played for South Australia, Western Australia, and New South Wales in Sheffield Cup, two seasons of World Series Cricket in Australia and toured in the West Indies.

The youngest Chappell brother has not so many experiences in international cricket like his elder brothers but he has represented Australia in ODI matches during 1980-81, played three matches in the 1982 Ashes tour in England and the 1983 World Cup.
